Rising fuel costs won’t slow RVers down Industry Members
OKEMOS, Mich.—Michigan RVers still plan on traveling this summer, filling the thousands of campsites across Michigan, despite the hike in fuel prices over the last few years.

The latest Campfire Canvass, a bi-annual survey of RV owners by the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA), reveals that more than a third of RVers say fuel costs will not affect their RV travel plans. Reducing the distance they drive and spending more time in one place are the top ways RV owners will adapt to the prices at the pump.

Even when fuel prices climb, RV trips remain one of the less costly vacations a family can take. Typical RV family vacations are nearly 27 to 61 percent less expensive.

RVing will continue to be one of the most cost effective ways to explore Michigan, allowing you the ability to do anything, and see anything. According to PKF Consulting, a travel and tourism research firm, fuel prices would have to double for RVing to be more expensive than other forms of travel. The study also shows that fuel costs would have to more than triple for trips in lightweight travel trailers or folding camping trailers to be more expensive than the least expensive non-RV vacation

Other notable findings in the survey:
  • 76 percent of RV owners intend to use their RVs as much as they did last year.
  • Of those who said their plans would be affected, 58 percent said they’d travel closer to home, 35 percent said they’d travel fewer miles and 34 percent said they’d stay longer in one place.
  • 75 percent plan on spending five or more weekends in their RVs.
  • 86 percent of respondents say traveling by RV provides more opportunity to spend doing outdoor activities.
