Michigan RV statistics

There are approximately 8.9 million American households that own an RV—up from 7.9 million in 2005. Here are some other notable facts and statistics:

• In 2011, RV manufacturers shipped 252,300 units, an increase of 4.18% from the 242,300 units shipped in 2010. This was the highest annual total for RV shipments in the past three years.
• A 2011 vacation cost comparison study showed that a family of four can save 23 to 59 percent on vacation costs by traveling in an RV, even after factoring in ownership costs and fuel.
• The Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) estimates there are as many as 30 million RV enthusiasts nationwide, including RV renters.
• According to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, there are over 950 licensed private recreation vehicle parks and campgrounds in Michigan, which represent more than 111,000 campsites. Nationwide, there are more than 16,000 public and private campgrounds.
• In 2011, the total number of new RVs sold in Michigan was 10,953. Sales in 2012 are projected to surpass 2011 sales.
• Buyers aged 35-54 are the largest segment of RV owners, according to the 2011 University of Michigan study commissioned by RVIA.
• A study by Michigan State University shows that 10 percent of all pleasure travelers in Michigan are campers.
• The RV rental business is a $350 million industry, according to the U.S. Census of Retail Trade and the RV Rental Association.
• There are more than 12,000 RV-related businesses in the U.S. with combined annual revenues of more than $37.5 billion.
• According to the Michigan Secretary of State, there were over 307,000 RVs registered in 2010—a 2.73 percent increase over 2009.
