RV winter camping tips
While many think of RVing as a summer only activity, there are plenty of advantages to RVing during the winter. As more campgrounds begin to offer winter camping and activities, people are beginning to see that winter camping can be just as enjoyable as summer camping!
Snowmobiling, skiing, sledding and ice fishing are just a few activities to enjoy while winter camping in your RV. Another advantage is the campgrounds are less crowded, giving you and your family more time and space to enjoy campground facilities. Planning activities is easier too, as you are already prepared for braving the elementslittle chance of a rain out during these months.
To help prepare your RV for the winter, here are a few tips:
- Bring winter tools like a snow shovel, ice scraper, ice chipper, rock salt or kitty litter to help remove snow and ice on and around your RV.
- Check battery water levels and start your engine periodically in motorized RVs to keep systems from freezing.
- When parking for an extended period of time, use long wooden boards (at least two feet by eight inches) to prevent ditches from forming under your tires due to ice and snow thawing and refreezing.
- To keep your RV warmer, use skirting and insulation on RVs that don’t have a basement compartment. This will also help to keep your black and grey tanks from freezing.
- Tape electric heat strips to water hoses to help prevent freezing. Bring bottled water in case your water tank does freezes up, and use until until your tank thaws.
